Vladimir Putin is the First Winner, says The Times

The Times devoted a large analytical article to the Russian President, The First Winner. There is only one unequivocal winner so far in the war on terror Vladimir Putin, writes the newspaper.
The September attacks have wiped Putin`s domestic embarrassments off the international agenda. Thanks to America`s sudden need for Russian co-operation and his own flawless diplomacy over the past two months, they have also left Putin on the threshold of a breakthrough in his relations with the West a breakthrough that could realize his dream of restoring Russia`s status and rebuilding its economy. Putin realized that the United States needed Russian support for using military facilities in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Without staging areas for operations into Afghanistan from the north, the coalition`s bid to take down bin Laden would have been even more daunting than it is already. Putin saw this at once and turned it to his advantage, The Times says. The result US and Russian troops side by side on what was the Soviet Union-s southern border would have been unthinkable three months ago.
The newspaper also mentions other successful diplomatic moves of the Russian leader, in particular, the closure of Russia`s largest Soviet-era listening post in Cuba and its last deep-water naval base in South-East Asia, as well as supplying the Northern Alliance with tanks and uniforms. In the global chess game, these were moves worthy of Garry Kasparov, The Times writes. They have left Putin vulnerable at home, where most Russians oppose the bombing in Afghanistan, but stronger in his dealings with America than any Russian leader since perestroika, and possibly since World War II. Putin made his support for the US unconditional, and George Bush owes him, concludes the newspaper.

The White House
Message from the President

As the new moon signals the holy month of Ramadan, I extend warm greetings to Muslims throughout the United States and around the world.
The Islam that we know is a faith devoted to the worship of one God, as revealed through The Holy Koran. It teaches the value and importance of charity, mercy and peace. And it is once of the fastest growing religions in America, with millions of American believers today.
The American Muslim community is as varied as the many Muslim communities across the world. Muslims from diverse background pray together in mosques all across our great land. And American Muslims serve in every walk of the life, including our armed forces.
The Holy Koran says: “Piety does not lie in turning your face to the East or West. Piety lies in believing in God” (2:177). Americans now have turned to act of charity, sending relief to the Afghan people, who have suffered for so many years. America is proud to play a leading role in the humanitarian relief efforts in Afghanistan, through airdrops and truck convoys of food, medicine, and other much-needed supplies. And today we are committed to working for the long-term reconstruction of that troubled land.
We send our sincerest wishes to Muslim in American and around the world for health, prosperity, and happiness during Ramadan and throughout the coming year.
